Bookstore plus

Regarding "Despite disheartening trends in the business, local literary bookstores survive and thrive" (Page B6, Aug. 5), thanks for mentioning the River Oaks bookstore in the editorial about independent literary bookstores. I have been a customer and friend of the store for more than 30 years, and each visit has been a joy.

In the box stores, the employees know how to receive money and give change.

At River Oaks, the employees have read the books and are happy to sit down and talk with you about the book.

Each of us is a friend, happy to greet other friends who wander in and visit over a plate of cookies. They are so important to us, and we treasure that place in our lives and community.

- Ann Brinkerhoff,

Houston
